In the early 1970’s, Dr. Taibi Kahler developed a clinical model for rapid psychological diagnosis called the "Miniscript." Using it, psychiatrists and psychologists found they could improve communication and significantly reduce treatment time.

For this discovery, the International Transactional Analysis Association awarded Dr. Kahler the 1977 Eric Berne Memorial Scientific Award.

From 1978 to 1996, when hiring astronauts, NASA used Dr. Kahler’s evaluation methods to determine which candidates would have the drive and appropriate stress responses to succeed in the high-pressure environment of a manned space mission.

Since the 1970’s, the scope of application of Process Communication Model® has grown extensively. The model's users include corporate executives, health care professionals, teachers and educators as well as politicians.

The Process Communication Model® has withstood professional scrutiny and been enhanced through continued research for over 35 years. Today, PCM is used by businesses and government agencies throughout the world as, among other things, a management, selection, placement and motivation methodology. The education applications of PCM are used by teachers to maximize their effectiveness and to connect with hard to reach students. Psychiatrists, psychologists and counselors use the clinical version of PCM, the Process Therapy Model® to treat and counsel their patients and clients.

What is the Process Communication Model®?

The Process Communication Model® (PCM) is the non-clinical communication and management methodology derived from Dr. Kahler's research. PCM can be used in every aspect of one's life, in every personal and business interaction.

At the core of PCM training is learning to identify another person's primary, or "Base" personality type, primarily through the language that he or she uses, and the unique communication styles, psychological needs, behaviors and other characteristics of each of the six personality types. With this knowledge, PCM can be used:

  • to engender a feeling of connection and rapport in others;
  • to identify the most effective style of communicating with someone - the specific words, tones, gestures, postures and facial expressions that are most likely to result in a productive interaction;
  • to ascertain a person's primary psychological needs and motivations and to use that knowledge to predict and influence his or her actions and decisions;
  • to understand the genesis of distress and how to avoid situations and behaviors that are likely to lead to it;
  • to recognize the speech patterns and behaviors that signal impending distress;
  • to predict and identify a person's distress behaviors; and
  • to implement targeted distress intervention tactics.

PCM training and consulting services are provided exclusively through a network of authorized trainers who have been trained, evaluated and certified by a PCM Master Trainer. Each Master Trainer has studied with Dr. Kahler to ensure that a uniform standard of competence is maintained among all PCM trainers worldwide. Certified PCM trainers are the only non-clinicians with the ability to administer the PERSONALITY PATTERN INVENTORY and to obtain the profiles and seminars based on its output.

Individual personality structure is comprised of six, separate and mutually exclusive behavior types, called Thinker, Harmoniser, Persister, Rebel, Imaginer, and Promoter. Likened to a six-floored condominium, personality structure is ordered, indicating the relative amount of time a person experiences and demonstrates the behaviors of a given type floor. These second-by-second behaviors – categorized by words, tones, gestures, postures and facial expressions – can be observed objectively with significantly high reliability. Additionally, test-retest reliability research indicates that once a person's condominium order is set, that order seldom changes.

People who wish to use the Process Communication Model® will first complete the Personality Pattern Inventory, a questionnaire which, once processed, will enable them to discover their personality structure. The metaphor of a condominium helps us to visualize the composition of each unique personality structure.

The Personality Pattern Inventory, also measures the amount of energy available to the individual to experience each personality floor. Correlations for each personality type include: character strengths, management styles, channels of communication, perceptual preferences, environmental choices, and personality traits.

No one type is better or worse, more or less intelligent, or more or less OK. Each has strengths and weaknesses.

Each of us has the need to appreciate values like the Persister; has some of the spontaneity of the Rebel; has the compassion and warmth of a Harmonizer; has the ability to be logical as does a Thinker; can enjoy the experience of taking a risk as can a Promoter and has some of the calm that the Imaginer shows. In PCM we do not therefore, speak of types of people, but types in people. However we each have one or sometimes two personality types more obvious in us than others.

  • To stimulate your attention and interest, the person talking with you will use a warm and nurturing voice.
  • You naturally communicate with others in a nurturing way.
  • To feel good and be efficient, you require being recognized as a person, i.e. wants to hear "I care about you", "you're important to me". You desire unconditional acceptance of you as a person and need an environment that pampers the senses.
  • Under light distress, in an interaction with others, you become unassertive regarding what you do, think, or say, and give priority to the other. You may accept unpleasant situations or make "wishy-washy" decisions.
  • Under severe distress, you make mistakes, laugh at yourself or act "stupid", attracting hostility from others as a consequence.

If your base personality type is Harmoniser, then you are probably appreciated for:

  • your warmth in relationships, your ability to nurture, be empathic, create harmony and give to others.
  • your ability to feel first and take in people and things by feeling about them.
  • your sensory application and your ability to use your five senses.

The base Thinker personality

Logical, Responsible and Organized

  • To gain your attention and your interest, the person talking to you will use a factual way of communication asking for or providing data.
  • You and others will communicate better through questions and exchanges of information.
  • To feel good and be efficient, you require being recognized for your thoughts and accomplishments. "Good work." "Great idea." "A job well done." You also require time structure and like to plan things.
  • Under light distress, in interactions with others, you may want to demonstrate you are doing things perfectly and you may reverse delegate. You may also give too much details, and insert needless qualifications, thinking you make yourself seem clearer. If distress increases, you could become over controlling, attack others, and argue about time, money, order, or cleanliness.
  • You require returning to your logical and structured way of thinking in order to regain your natural efficiency. Reassuring yourself that you are doing a good job, or having others do this, is the key to your recovery.

If your base personality type is Thinker, then you are probably appreciated for:

  • your capacity for organization and detailed planning.
  • your logic in structuring ideas or issues and explaining quickly and clearly to others.
  • your ability to take responsibility, making you a welcoming person in both your professional and personal relationships.

The base Persister personality
character strengths are:
Dedicated, Observant and Conscientious

  • To feel good and be efficient, you require your convictions/beliefs to be recognized: "I admire you." "I value your opinion." "What do you believe we should do?" You also require being recognized for your accomplishments: "Good work." "Great contribution." "A job well done."
  • Under light distress, in an interaction with others, you may focus on what is wrong rather than what is right; then, if distress increases, you may push beliefs, be overly suspicious and righteous: "My opinion is the only right one."
  • You need to regain trust in the person you are talking to in order to regain your natural efficiency.

If your base personality type is Persister, then you are probably appreciated for:

  • your ability to observe and give opinions, beliefs, judgements about situations and persons.
  • your conscientiousness in both professional and personal life. People often admire your moral conduct and your ethics.
  • your devotion to causes, a political party, your company, etc. and your tenacity in respecting your ideals, principles and values.

The base Imaginer personality

Calm, Imaginitive and Reflective

  • To grab your attention and your interest, the person talking to you will use a clear, unambiguous and direct way of communication.
  • You don't react overtly. You take time to answer briefly if you are required to.
  • You may require external stimulation to do things and you tend to wait for others to get in contact with you first.
  • To feel good and be efficient, you require your own private time and space for reflection and introspection. You may well "escape" during long meetings or discussions. This gives you the ability to endure difficult situations.
  • Under light distress, in an interaction with another person, you may wait passively, thinking that time will solve the problem. Then, if distress increases, you could withdraw, not finishing the work you have started.
  • You require a time of solitude to regain your natural efficiency.

If your base personality type is Imaginer, then you are probably appreciated for:

  • your calm, however grave the situation, in which you are able to quietly analyze the different hypothesis or possible solutions.
  • your ability to reflect and think about humanity, to observe yourself and others, and to not judge others too quickly.
  • your imagination for exploring all the hypothesis or possible options in a given situation.

The base Promoter personality

Adaptable, Persusasive and Charming

If you have a Promoter base:

  • To stimulate your listening and your interest, the person talking to you will use a firm and directive communication style.
  • You appreciate communicating with a directive style.
  • You are particularly efficient faced with challenges, difficult or new things to do.
  • To feel good and be efficient, you require incidence i.e. lots of excitement in a short period of time. You like the high level of energy in these situations.
  • Under distress, in an interaction with others, you may be impatient and see the other as too weak. Then, if distress increases, you may take risks i.e. for your health, personal safety or your business interests. You may become manipulative to reach your goals without due consideration for others, overstep the limits, and/or break the rules.
  • You require a challenge or positive incidence in order to return to being positively motivated and naturally efficient.

If your base personality type is Promoter, then you are probably appreciated for:

  • your charm, born from your direct way of communication and your well aimed compliments. Even if you may be considered tactless, you are appreciated as a good and pleasant companion.
  • your extraordinarily resourcefulness and your ability to get back on your feet after any setback. You will always get moving again.
  • your ability to adapt to any new situation or environment. You like change and are turned off by routine.

The base Rebel personality

Spontaneous, Creative and Playful

  • To gain your attention and your interest, the person talking to you will use an up and energetic style of communication, speaking of likes and dislikes.
  • To feel good and be efficient, you require being stimulated through playful contact, with regular changes of situations and relationships. Your first reaction is often to like or dislike.
  • Under light distress, in an interaction with others, you may start to misunderstand and say things like "I don't know". Things may seem boring and complicated to you. If distress increases, you may project responsibility onto others and be insincere e.g. "If it weren't for you".
  • You require to regain contact with others through, 'play'. By joking or laughing in this way you can regain your natural efficiency.

If your base personality type is Rebel, then you are probably appreciated for:

  • your creativity: you may find solutions when others saw only problems.
  • your ability to turn a boring task into a game.
  • your spontaneity, source of positive energy and enthusiasm for others.
